A strong and ﬁery prop from the Scottish Borders area, who gained immortality in Scottish eyes by being Scotland’s captain in the 1983–84 Five Nations championship series – its ﬁrst outright win of the championship for 46 years. It was also Scotland’s ﬁrst Grand Slam (winning over each of the other four teams) since 1925.
